Types of Chronic Pain

You may experience chronic inflammation in a number of areas. Types of ongoing discomfort include:

  • Knee Pain

  • Nerve Pain

  • Shoulder Pain

  • Back and Neck Pain

  • Hip Pain

  • Headache

Diagnosing the Cause of Your Pain

Before we can alleviate your discomfort, we will first uncover its underlying cause. There are a number of things that can cause irritation in these areas. In some cases, it could be the result of joint damage. For example, back and neck pain could arise due to a herniated disc or spinal fractures. Shoulder or knee pain could occur because of arthritis or a sports injury. In other cases, chronic pain could be a symptom of a larger concern. Many neurological conditions can cause headaches or tingling and numbness in your extremities.

We will use many different methods to diagnose the reason for your pain. In some cases, x-rays and CT scans can reveal injury to the joints or surrounding tissues. Manual exams and an evaluation of your symptoms can also be helpful. However, if your chronic pain is due to neurological damage, we may recommend a more advanced test. An electromyography test will measure how fast your body responds to electrical signals from your nerves.

Pain Management Techniques

Once we understand the cause of your pain, we can determine the most suitable treatment option. In cases of mild to moderate pain, oral medications may be sufficient. Other options for more severe pain include:

  • BOTOX®: These injections contain small, safe amounts of botulinum toxin. The neurotoxin will block nerve impulses so that tense and overactive muscles will relax.

  • Trigger point injections: Trigger points are tiny isolated knots in your muscles that can cause radiating pain. Your doctor can inject these areas with an anesthetic to release the tense areas.

  • Joint injections: Steroid injections can alleviate joint inflammation. We most often use joint injections to treat lower back pain.

  • Nerve blocks: Injections of anesthetic can numb painful, inflamed nerves.

We can also refer you to a physical therapist or massage therapist, if needed.
