What Causes Chronic Dizziness?

Often, persistent issues with balance are the result of inner ear problems, such as a vestibular disease. Problems with your central motor function can also contribute to the problem. A diagnosis allows the doctors to assess the cause of the problem; from there the doctor can discuss possible treatment options.

How Will the Doctor Diagnose the Problem

To uncover the cause of your problem the doctor may suggest a videonystagmography (VNG) test. The test is in four parts and allows the doctors to assess possible functional problems of one or both ears:

  • The first part involves following a series of slow and fast moving and still objects with your eyes

  • The second part involves looking at a single, large moving object

  • The third portion involves the doctor moving your head and neck in certain ways to look for issues with eye movement

  • In the final portion, the doctor stimulates the inner ears one at a time with warm and cold air to make sure they can be stimulated

The test may take from half an hour to an hour and allows the doctor to diagnose any problems related to either central motor functions or the inner ear. You should contact your insurance provider to see if the test is covered.

How Will the Doctor Treat Balance Issues?

There are actually quite a few options for treating vertigo and dizziness problems. With vestibular rehabilitation therapy, the doctor uses certain exercise involving the head and neck to re-train the inner ear to function properly. Other treatment issues may include diet changes, medication, and in rare cases, surgery. Treatment will depend on the patients’ individual health.
